IPCC's Fifth Assessment Report: A Comprehensive Overview

Understanding the Impacts of Climate Change

The Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Published in 2014, the IPCC's AR5 provides a comprehensive assessment of the scientific, technical, and socio-economic information relevant to understanding the impacts of climate change.

Key Findings of the AR5

The AR5 found that it is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of observed warming since the mid-20th century.

The report highlights that global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions must be significantly reduced to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, as recommended by the Paris Agreement.

Structure of the AR5

The AR5 consists of three Working Group reports:

  • Working Group I: The Physical Science Basis
  • Working Group II: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability
  • Working Group III: Mitigation of Climate Change

In addition, the report includes a Synthesis Report that distils the findings of the Working Group contributions.

Relevance to Policymakers and Stakeholders

The AR5 provides a robust scientific basis for informed decision-making on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies. It is widely used by policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in addressing the challenges of climate change.

Ongoing Work: The Sixth Assessment Report (AR6)

The IPCC is currently working on the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), which is expected to be released in 2021. The AR6 will provide an updated assessment of climate science and its implications for the future.
